For diagnosis and evaluation, a physiatrist may include the techniques of electromyography to complement the standard history, physical, x-ray, and laboratory examinations. Dr. Watson has expertise in the appropriate use of therapeutic exercise, prosthetics (artificial limbs), orthotics and mechanical and electrical devices.
Physiatrists are medical doctors who have undergone medical school and training in the specialty field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physiatrists diagnose illnesses, design treatment plans and can prescribe medications when needed. Physiatrists tailor exercise programs to specific patients needs and prescribe treatment regimens that are utilized by therapists. A physical therapist is not a medical doctor and cannot prescribe medications but supervises exercise and rehabilitation programs with the goal of improving function. Physical therapists utilize treatment plans that are prescribed by physiatrists and other physicians.
